2021: New Year, New Furniture Trends

2021 is a fresh year, and many of us are eager to leave 2020 in the past. In addition to the new year, we’re also approaching spring — the season of renewal. While some people like to prepare by turning to spring cleaning their homes, others may want to try something a little more drastic. For those wanting to update the furniture in their homes, here are the furniture design trends to be on the lookout for in 2021:

Relaxed & Rustic

Fans of feeling cozy, rejoice! The clean, cold, more rigid mid-century modern look that has dominated furniture the last few years is on its way out. “Cottagecore” is a thing now, so expect to see it reflected in home furnishings. Rustic furniture works ideally in homes that already have some interesting features, such as exposed beams, original floorboards, or panelled walls, but can equally be re-created with a considered balance of old and new pieces that work together in harmony.

Yellow & Gray

This year, Pantone took the unusual step of naming two colors as their shades of the year: Illuminating, a zingy yellow, and Ultimate Yellow, a pale gray. That being said, expect to see this color combo everywhere. Luckily, gray furniture has been popular for years now, so if you already own a gray sofa, sectional, or bedroom set, you can hop on this trend by adding yellow accents in the form of throw pillows for your couch or a sunny new comforter for your bed.

Perhaps missing the days when we used to be able to entertain company in our homes, people are starting to gravitate toward a living room that is comfortable, approachable, and functional. Maybe rather than replacing your current furniture, you can add to what you already have. Adding accent chairs to serve as additional seating, or a new table to play family board games on are a great way to incorporate this trend.
