Decorating Your Second Home

Johnson's Furniture
Your second home should be your sanctuary; a place for a weekend getaway, an escape from the stresses of daily life, a gathering space to unwind with family and friends. Second homes are also a great place to display your personality, and perhaps a bit of your quirky side.

You need to ensure that home-away-from-home is your retreat, a place that you want to continue visiting. It all starts with your decor scheme to make your place uniquely yours.

Here are some tips for designing your second home:
Think non-conventional. Your second home is the place to have some decorating fun, so any usual rules do not apply. Create a unique space by experimenting with colors and light. Seek out bold patterns or colors that you shied away from using at your primary home; it’s your time to embrace something completely different.  If you imagined having a lime green accent wall or a purple and orange area rug, now might be the time to try it. Start off in moderation with bold prints, and add more colors and patterns slowly.
Multi-purpose space. If you plan on having large gatherings with family and friends, you’ll need to plan for future flexibility. An open floor plan offers plenty of opportunities for entertaining both for large groups or a party of two. Investing in multi-purpose or modular furniture provides seating, and, in some cases, sleeping options for guests. Whatever furniture you purchase, select well-made furnishings and durable textiles that will last for years. This is especially important if you decide to rent your home out in the future.
Find inspiration. Look to your surroundings for design clues and influences. If your home is on the coast, consider oceanic blues and greens with rope and driftwood accents for both the indoors and outdoor deck or patio. For a rustic cabin in the woods, stick to colors such as reds and yellows to invoke warmth and comfort. Adding an outdoor fire pit with stacks of logs and sociable seating,  add to the coziness of the space. Wherever your retreat may take you, incorporate locally-inspired prints and art pieces to give the space an authentic feel.
